Relay from Fort Benning to Fort Gordon raises thousands of dollars

The runners relayed from Fort Benning to Fort Gordon.

FORT GORDON, GA (WFXG) – The fifth annual Benning to Gordon Relay is in the books,
Several men crossed the distance from Fort Benning to Fort Gordon to raise money for the Fisher House and patients at the Eisenhower Medical Center.

The relay runners ran about 10-12 hours a day and crossing over 250 miles total–from Buena Vista to Augusta.
The small group managed to raise $5,300 for the Eisenhower Medical Center and Fisher House of Fort Gordon.
Both facilities work toward the treatment of military personnel and that’s all the inspiration this group needed.

“We just feel like, in today’s time, the people that protect our nation sometimes do not get the recognition, support, and just love that they deserve,” said runner Chad Waters.

Reaching the finish line at the Fisher House was a big enough reward.

“They always have a tremendous reception here for us and make us feel so welcome,” said Ray Miller, completing the relay for the fifth time. “It’s just a great feeling.”

The group comes from the Millen area, with only two having military experience.
And their dedication has not gone unnoticed.

“Having individuals that are willing to take the time of their life to put an event like this together, and do this for our Fisher House at Fort Gordon, means a whole lot,” said Francisco Cruz, the Fisher House manager at Fort Gordon.

It’s a tough four-day relay that serves as a major drain on the runner’s spirits.

“Well, every year about this time, guys say, ‘I’m not sure about next year,'” said Miller.

All that doubt gets trampled when they finally see what they have been running for.

“When we turn that corner there and we see the soldiers and we see the Fisher House–it’s been a long four days and it just makes it all worth it,” said Waters.
